The original list of native plant nurseries and seed suppliers was produced for the NPSBC in 1998. The list was compiled by Ross Waddell for the City of Vancouver Waterworks Design, Diane Douglas of the BC Ministry of Forests and Tom Wells of BC Hydro. The information was confirmed through a survey of native plant specialty nurseries in British Columbia and non-specialty wholesale nurseries known to stock some native species. The original list was posted on the City of Vancouver Waterworks Design website and over the years, it has been linked to many other websites as well as copied into print in a number of external publications. That list is now out of date. The revised specialty native plant nurseries and seed suppliers list posted below is the definitive list for British Columbia and is continually updated as changes in the industry occur. The current list includes only those nurseries - wholesale or retail - as well as retail garden centres and stores that specialize in native plants. The majority of the stock in listed nurseries must be propagated from sustainably collected seeds and cuttings; nurseries might also have a small percentage of salavaged stock but it must be collected according to established ethical standards. For forest tree species, a separate list of wholesale forestry nurseries was originally developed by Eric Van Steenis of the BC Ministry of Forests and it can be accessed by clicking here. There also may be non-specialty wholesale nurseries that stock some native species but they are not included on the list unless they have a minimum of twenty such species in substantial quantities. Please note that in general, wholesale nurseries will not supply clients with small orders. These orders should be directed to the retail nurseries listed below; or clients should ask their local retail garden centres if they can stock or order native species. The NPSBC also organizes or supports a number of annual plant sales in the South Coast and Islands regions that offer an excellent selection of plants grown by specialty native plant nurseries in the province.
