Some Things to Think About When Purchasing Native Plants:

• The originating
biogeoclimatic zone
• The mature size of the plant
• The elevation: sub-montane to montane to alpine
• The exposure: full sun to
partial and full shade
• The soil moisture: dry to moist to wet
• The slope/drainage and soil texture: water-receiving or shedding; organic to mineral
• The soil nutrients: nutrient poor, medium, rich
• The soil acidity: acid to alkaline

The NPSBC encourages the use of native plants propagated in nurseries from collected seeds and cuttings.

The NPSBC organizes and/or supports a number of specialty native plant sales held each spring in the South Coast and Islands regions of British Columbia. These sales offer a wide selection of species native to the West Coast, from Alaska to northern California. They provide one of the best opportunities to purchase plants from specialty nurseries that are not commonly available or which sell out early in the season; and they also offer expert information on growing native species in the garden.
